Friday Night Kickoff - July 28, 2017

  • 5pm - 7pm: Pre-Concert Open House Florence Griswold

    Free admission to the special exhibition Flora/Fauna: The Naturalist Impulse in American Art. Krieble Gallery.

  • Nick Anderson band

    7pm - 9pm: Midsummer Concert featuring Nick Anderson and the Shady Creek Band Florence Griswold

    This year, Nick and Shady Creek Band bring traditional bluegrass music with a healthy serving of that “high lonesome sound” to the banks of the Lieutenant River. With high-energy picking and soulful duet, trio, and quartet harmonies, the band will have you dancing in your seat. The free concert is always a favorite and makes for a picnic-perfect summer evening.     The Fence Show Artists are in their 26th year of exhibiting with the Midsummer Festival. We are now back at our favorite festival location, the Old Lyme Inn. Our Paris style of putting our art "on the fence" is unique and fun. Come visit, browse, talk to the artists and find a treasured piece of art for your collection!

    Join us at the Sculpture Grounds for an exciting runway show through the sculptures by Hygienic Art resident artist Susan Hickman and fashion designers Anna Lucas and Cristin Rivera. There will be an on-site boutique featuring a wide variety of their creations for sale during both shows.

    Lymes' Senior Center presents ~ Caricature Drawings with Bill Hernandez from partycartoons.com. Come have a free caricature portrait done or just watch this amazing artist at work. He welcomes questions from the crowd as he works.

Classes, Talks & Demonstrations

  • 9am - 4pm: Art DemonstrationsOld Lyme Inn

    The Fence Show Artists will be demonstrating their mediums throughout the day. Come walk the fence with us at the Old Lyme Inn and see some of the artists watercolor, pastel, drawing and other mediums.

  • 9am - 4pm: Demonstrations by Lyme Faculty, Alumni and BFA Students Lyme Academy College

    Demonstrations throughout the day by current BFA Students, Faculty, and Alumni including encaustic painting, gilding, drawing and more.

  • 10-10:45am Yoga on the Lawn Town Hall

    Yoga instructor, Laura Kokaska will be leading this 45 minute class.  Bring your beach towel or mat and join us for this free class sponsored by the Lymes' Senior Center.

  • 10am - 2pm: The Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resources Recovery Authority (SCRRRA) Old Lyme PGN Library

    Help us to “Build a Better World” by learning more about recycling and marine debris through interactive games, a prize wheel, and videos.

  • 10am - 3pm: Weaving Demonstrations by Area 4 of the Handweavers Guild of Connecticut Old Lyme Historical Society

    • Frances Lo will demonstrate plain weave and hand-manipulated weaves such as Leno, Brooks Bouquet, pick up, and clasped weft, on a rigid heddle loom.
    • Stephanie Morton will weave a Connecticut River Blanket using a 32" Tools of the Trade loom and Patricia Fortinsky's Tidal Yarns.
    • Susan Morrison will weave dishtowels on an 8-harness Baby Wolf loom, and also spin yarn.
  • 10am - 3pm: Hands-On Screen Printing Old Lyme PGN Library

    Stop by the Library to create a t-shirt to take home! Young Adult Librarian Nike Desis will be on hand to guide you through the process (suggested $5 donation).

    Step into the Association’s studio and see artists create works of art right before eyes. A fascinating process to observe.

    Richard Newton will give an artist lecture about his imaginative sculptures.

  • 11am - 3pm: Connecticut Authors from History Press Old Lyme PGN Library

    The rich history of the Connecticut River Valley will be explored in several author talks on our fabled waterways, infamous pirates, remarkable women, revolutionary war ghosts,  our culinary past and well-crafted wines from regional vintners.

Family Fun

  • 8am - 9:30am: LYSB Midsummer 5K Run, Walk and Kids K Lymes' Youth Service Bureau

    Saturday’s festival kicks off with a morning race that winds through the historic Old Lyme Village to benefit LYSB’s youth and mental health programs. Sponsored by Simpson Healthcare Executives. Preregister at www.lysb.org or onsite at race day. Registration opens at 6:45am.

  • 8:30am - 3pm: Lyme-Old Lyme Lions Club Antique Car Show Bee & Thistle Inn

    Come enjoy a fun day of antique autos on the Bee and Thistle Inn lawn and support your community and vision-related charities as well. Check out well-preserved autos from pre-WWI through the Muscle Car era to the early 90s and get pick your favorite in over 12 different classes. $5.00 admission fee.

    Have an antique car? Register at: lymeoldlymelions.org. $10.00 entry per car. Plaques will be awarded to the first 100 cars. Cars should arrive after 8:30am. Final award at 2pm.
